Add caption
The Yamunotri Temple is situated near a hot spring running water in geyser force and in which the pilgrims cook their food. The Temple of Yamunotri is at the foothill of the Kalind Parvat at the left bank of the Yamuna at a height of 3,185 metres. Acting as a backdrop, a glorious waterfall drops, more than 2,000 metres from the snow of Banderpoonch into the valley at this point. Besides `Ratnjot` an herb claimed to be curative for eye diseases, with chestnuts, walnuts, and apricots grow in abundance in this valley. A frozen lake of ice on the top of Kalind Parvat, at a height of 4,421 metres and almost a kilometre further up is the source of the Yamuna but since the approach to it, is extremely unsafe, the temple has been built at the foothill. Here, the sage Asset had his habitat, all his life he bathed in both, Ganga and Yamuna.

 YAMUNOTRI TEMPLE
Yamunotri Temple lies in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas. It is situated at a height of 3235m.

Goddess Yamuna  the river goddess is worshipped here and has special significance in Hindu scriptures. The idol is made of black marble.

The river Yamuna emerges from Yamunotri glacier which is at a height of 4420 m near the Kalind mountain. This place was the home of Sage Asit.

The temple was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah
of Tehri Garhwal. A hot sulphur spring pond is situated at Yamunotri close to the temple. Devotees cook potato and
rice at this pond and offer to the Goddess.

The sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of Bandar Poonch Parvat. The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Jankichatti (7 km. Away).

The actual source a frozen lake of ice & glacier (Champasar glacier) located on the Kalind mountain at the height of 4421 m above sea level, about 1 km further up, is not frequented generally as it is not accessible and hence the shrine has been located on the foot of the hill. The approach is extremely difficult and pilgrims therefore offer pooja at the temple itself.

The temple of Yamuna is on the left bank of Yamuna constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.

About Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri, the source of revered river Yamuna, is situated on top of Bandar Poonch Peak (3615meters), almost opposite to Gangotri Dham. The shrine is located in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas. Many consider the actual source of Yamuna as Champasar glacier, at the Kalinda Mountain having the height of 4421meters above sea level. However, owing to inhospitable human conditions, the glacier is inaccessible, and therefore, the shrine is comfortably positioned at the foothills of the mountain glacier. The small, pristine and frigid water flowing down from the glacier incites the feeling of piety and worship in the hearts of the devotees at Yamunotri Dham .
The holy shrine has many hot water glaciers that flow through the mountain cavities. Suryakund is the popular holy bath place, lying adjacent to Divya Shila. The Shila is considered holy and is worshipped before Puja of Goddess Yamuna. The hot water springs also serve as the special place to prepare rice and potatoes, which are taken back home by the devotees as the token of Goddess Yamuna’s blessings. The priests who perform daily rituals and Puja belong to small village of Kharsali near Jankichatti.
